The first photo shows the inside of the Rus Viking leather helm, with the cloth liner removed. Notice that the front and back body pieces benefitted by having a dart at the bottom center, which was then covered by the band. Only by looking inside can you tell that it's there. You can also see the threads that hold the faux ivory buttons in place, and the end of a dowel at the top of the helm to which the ivory toppiece is attached.
The sweatband is adjustable, and will fit just about any size head. It is made of heavy top grain garment cowhide. The size is adjusted by tightening or loosening the leather cord. This design was taken from 19th century military helmets, and has probably been utilized for centuries.
How I made the Rus Viking helm.
How to make faux ivory buttons
I will soon be offering a ceremonial viking helmet in kit form. Watch here for details. I am also considering offering some of these helmets pictured in kit form. They would consist of precut leather pieces, cast resin parts, horsehair, etc., plus complete instructions on how to assemble. If you might be interested in purchasing such a kit, please write me with the word "helmet" in the subject line, and let me know which helmet or helmets you would be interested in. There is no commitment to buy at this time. I am just trying to gauge whether or not there is sufficient interest for me to pursue this.
You can email me here.
