Hanalei Kauai Watercolor Giclée

Henry Otto Wix 1901

Giclée watercolor prints of Mt. Mamalahoa and Hanalei Bay on Kauai

The Painting

The original watercolors were painted in 1901 by Otto Wix who is well known for his landscapes. My great grandparents George and Clara Dole lived on Kauai during much of the 19th century, and met Wix during his travels there. They purchased two of his watercolors that were painted the same day on Hanalei Bay.

The larger of the two Mt. Mamalahoa features the mountain Mamalahoa and Hanalei Bay. The original watercolor measures about 21¾" x 16¾". Dwarfed by the mountain and the cloud-filled sky are a small building, a sailboat on the bay, and a man by a boat on the beach.

The smaller of the two Hanalei Bay shows the base hills of Mamalahoa and more of Hanalei Bay. The original watercolor measures about 15¼" x 10¾". With the sunlit crags and the stormy sky behind them, a couple strolls along the water's edge.

Henry Otto Wix

Henry Otto Wix was born in Germany in 1866. He was most famous for landscapes, frequently employing watercolor, though he was a talented oil painter as well. Perhaps leaving Germany to avoid the draft as a young man, Wix traveled first to New York and then to San Francisco in the early 1900's. He set up a studio in the latter city, which he used as a base for frequent trips to Mexico and Hawaii. While famous for scenes of Yosemite, Mt. Tamalpais, and the Monterey coast in California, he is most known for painting landscapes of Kauai in Hawaii. In 1920 he joined his contemporaries in an exhibition sponsored by the Honolulu Art Society, which included paintings from the Old Masters as well as more modern works. Sadly, in his later years Wix suffered from poor health and alcoholism, and he committed suicide in Santa Barbara in 1922.

Provenance

George Dole who purchased the painting from Otto Wix was the eldest son of missionary Daniel Dole, and was born at Punahou in 1842, where his father was the principal. He married Clara Maria Rowell, daughter of missionary George Berkeley Rowell. George Dole worked much of his life managing a sugar mill at Kapaa, Kauai. George and Clara had 13 children, one of whom was my grandfather. Upon the death of my great grandparents, the painting passed on to Clara Marie Dole, one of their unmarried daughters. When Clara died she willed the painting to my mother.
