About the dragon helm

This is a six panel helm of vegetable tanned pigskin made in 2006. I had designed this basic Viking helm over 20 years ago, but without the horsehair tuft. I loved the idea of the dragon with his tail winding upward to the point of the panels. I carved the antler base at that time, but never got as far as putting it on a helm.

The pattern is very simple and—unlike most of my helmets—was made without a form (which is why it looks somewhat lumpy). The six panels are all identically shaped triangles with the sides bulging out slightly (see drawing above).

Behind the antler with the carving of a Viking longship is a piece of brown rabbit fur. The horsehair tuft—along with the dragon paintings—give it a look of Eastern influence. Hand-stitched with waxed thread, and sealed with clear lacquer.
